Black and grey classical realism knight tattoo – Best Tattoo Shop in Perth, Western Australia

Black and grey realism uses only black ink, diluted into soft greys, to build images that look almost three-dimensional on the skin. It is at its most striking in classical subjects: marble statues, gods and heroes from mythology, armour, beasts and dramatic light and shadow.

At Primitive Tattoo on Barrack Street, we tattoo black and grey realism from single pieces to full sleeves.

What makes classical realism work

  • Contrast: deep blacks next to clean skin give the piece depth. Without strong contrast, realism turns flat and muddy over the years.
  • Smooth shading: gradual soft grey transitions are what make stone look like stone and skin look like skin.
  • Composition: one strong focal point, such as a face, a statue or a beast, with supporting elements that lead the eye around the arm.

Popular subjects

  • Greek and Roman statues, gods and goddesses
  • Mythological beasts such as Cerberus, lions, wolves and dragons
  • Knights, armour and warriors
  • Angels, saints and religious imagery
  • Clocks, roses, skulls and architecture as supporting pieces

Size and placement

Realism needs space for detail. A forearm, upper arm, calf or thigh suits a single subject. A full sleeve or back piece allows a whole scene. Your artist will suggest a size that keeps faces and fine detail readable as the tattoo ages.

Sessions and healing

Smaller pieces can often be finished in one session. Sleeves are built over several sessions, with healing time in between. If you work fly-in fly-out from Karratha, Port Hedland, Newman, Tom Price or Kalgoorlie, tell us your roster and we will plan sessions around your days off in Perth.

Aftercare

Keep the tattoo clean, don’t pick or scratch, and keep it out of the sun while it heals. Once healed, sunscreen protects the soft greys, which are the first thing the sun fades.
